Treat Mom to a special meal this Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!

Poetry is a dying art. And no, Tweets don't count. Yet when spring explodes into full flower in the month of May, we always feel compelled to quote from lost lyricists. "What potent blood hath modest May," wrote Ralph W. Emerson, the great American transcendentalist. We agree that the month is rife with potent opportunities for transcending the doldrums of the daily grind.

First off, there's reason to celebrate! Sure, you can find a May pole to dance around, but what we had in mind was taking Mom out for Mother's Day Brunch on May 8. You'll need to show up thoroughly equipped with a posh present from our list of Top 10 Mother's Day Gifts, Top 10 Spa Gifts or at least a bottle of vino from our selection of Top 10 Mother's Day Brunch Wines.

Many of the other great products we reviewed this month would also double well as gifts. The feisty Tabasco Spicy Chocolate, the dreamy Zhena's Gypsy Egyptian Mint Tea, the Coq au Vin-friendly wine chicken cooker or any of these brand new books, Color Me Vegan, Serve Yourself and YUCK!, are cool ideas from the road less traveled (there's that poetry again!). If Mom has a weight problem, the latter, with its vivid images of cicadas on a stick and goat testicles, might prompt her to stop eating for a while. But if she doesn't have to count calories, she would surely appreciate a batch of chocolate cupcakes, our healthy recipe of the month (healthy thanks to reduced fat cream cheese, low fat buttermilk and vitamin-packed fresh raspberries).

Another option for getting closer could be to hash out some buried childhood issues. Our list of Top 10 Movie Moms would certainly come in handy for a shared therapy session in front of the LCD screen. Worry not, while we did include thought-provoking material like "Mommie Dearest" and "Mother and Child," there's also light fare like "Mamma Mia!" Enough about Mom already? Just one more: Top 10 Cars for Moms, featuring cool "mommy mobiles" that aren't just for the soccer crowd. Or maybe she's more of a Top 10 Crossovers kind of gal or looking for a powerful SUV like our car of the month, the 2011 Dodge Durango Citadel?

The Zen-like style of a room at La Réserve Ramatuelle, one of our best hotels in France

For further inspiration for May madness, we draw on sensualist Marcel Proust, although we never did quite make it through Remembrance of Things Past. To the French novelist, the voyage is not about seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. Well, with our lists of the Top 10 Hotels in Spain, Top 10 Hotels in France and Top 10 Hot European Hotels you can have both, and we are not talking LASIK eye surgery: new adventures on the old continent and the remembrances that stay with you forever. For more travel ideas in the land of Proust — or how about that of Goethe? Read about the scribe's romantic home town, Leipzig, and the rest of East Germany — and elsewhere in Europe, check out our Europe Guide.
