Dear readers,

Today, as you may know, is the last day of August, and if that didn’t coincide with an incredible harvest, I would be blue about it.

But oh! The plenty. At the farmers’ market this week, I, like the many others I saw, piled my basket high with all the things farmers’ markets were made for — namely, produce: heirloom tomatoes, kale, basil for pesto, hazelnuts, spinach, corn, eggplant, zucchini, peaches, cherries, and two kinds each of peppers, beans, and cucumbers. I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but you get the idea.

Of course, there was much I didn’t buy too — but that’s what next week is for.

Some places may be suffering market over-saturation, but I don’t see it on Saturdays in Portland, when my loyal market pal, Susan, and I trek to the Park Blocks for our weekly shopping trip. It’s almost always crowded — really crowded. But honestly, that’s part of the pleasure. I get a little itchy when we don’t make it to the market; the excursion is cheering and sustaining for us — and I’m guessing that’s the case for other shoppers who frequent farmers’ markets as well.

We’re all lucky that these markets exist. I hope you’ll take advantage of yours while these days of abundance are upon us.
