Menu Design Hasn't Changed

Words still matter and descriptive labels still work.

I first learned the 'ins and outs' of what is important on a restaurant's menu when I was asked to design one for the long gone Jonathan's restaurant on route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights New Jersey. And it's something that supermarkets should be studying for their grocerants.

First thing to remember is that some menu items are more expensive to produce than others based on their ingredient cost and the difficulty in preparation – but too many different pricings on a menu may confuse consumers which is why so many menus, even those in very expensive white table cloth restaurants, present these items in a special area contained within a box, which is where your eye goes first.
